The first post of the September/October issue of ACE News spotlights the
many marvelous aspects of the recent ACE Preservation Conference in
Colorado. ACE President Robert Ulrich chats with members in his regular
column. Two regional events — ACE Around the World and ACE Plays at
Canobie Lake Park — share good times from the ACE Heart of America and
ACE New England regions.

The ACE Preservation Conference’s theme took on an entirely new
significance in 2021: the preservation of the event and the perseverance
of many of those who attended. Not only did a global pandemic force its
rescheduling from 2020, but Mother Nature intervened as well. Heavy
rains earlier in the summer resulted in mudslides that closed a section
of I-70 — an important highway artery from Denver to Glenwood Springs —
and resulted in a portion of the approximately 145 attendees enduring a
lengthy detour to reach the first of the event’s three destinations.

During my time in ACE, I have always thought of myself as a unique
individual in a group of other unique individuals, all of whom have
diverse opinions. But lately, and especially on social media, it appears
that there are people who are only active in the “enthusiast” universe
who measure themselves by how many likes, shares and followers they
have, regardless of the roller coaster they ride and the legacies in the

Like Phileas Fogg who raced around the world in Jules Verne’s /Around
the World in 80 Days/ — on which Worlds of Fun (Kansas City, Missouri)
is themed — 27 ACE members and guests were ready for a world of
adventure when the inaugural ACE Around the World event kicked off on

It may have been sunny and hot between 9 and 9:30 a.m. as 36 ACE members
and guests checked in at Canobie Lake Park on August 14. Once inside the
Salem, New Hampshire, park, however, breezes off Canobie Lake and
