8. UK's Last Wooden Side-Friction Coaster Demolished
===========================================From Colleen Whyte:
This article is from the April 07 Amusement Today!
UK's last wooden side-friction coaster demolished (APRIL 6, 2007)
According to reports from British correspondents, the Runaway Coaster at
the former Rotunda Amusement Park, Folkestone, was demolished yesterday.
Built in 1922, it was the only remaining side-friction coaster in the UK.Save Dreamland Campaign Leader, Nick Laister, made the following
“We contacted the developers of the former Rotunda Park and said that we
statement last evening: “The ride was earmarked for demolition first
thing on Monday. As soon as we found out that demolition was imminent,
the Save Dreamland Campaign worked tirelessly over to save the Runaway
Coaster, being the only side friction figure eight coaster left in the UK.
wanted to move the ride off the site and place it into storage. The
developers said they would delay demolition by 48 hours to give us time
to confirm to them in writing that we would
remove the ride from the site within six weeks. An engineer visited the
site and inspected the ride, which was found to be in remarkably good
condition, although some wood replacement would have been necessary. We
contacted an established ride transportation company and got a quote for
dismantling the ride and moving it to storage. We were able to secure
financial support for this amount and, on our behalf, our supporter
wrote to the developer confirming they would underwrite these costs and
the ride would be removed within the required period. Despite confirming
receipt of the letter, demolition
proceeded today regardless with no explanation. This is disappointing as
there are no more traditional side friction coasters left in the UK."The only other side-friction coaster in operation is Leap-the-Dips at
Lakemont, Park, Altoona, Pa.

10. An Invitation To All Coney Island Enthusiasts
===========================================Hi,
Thanks so much for sending out the word to other ACE members about the
Coney Island exhibit at the Northport Library. I too am an ACE member,
and have been for many years. I also happen to be the individual who
created that display. Not only is it in the Children's section, I have
also added a display is the main section of the Library. And in that
display is an Ariel photograph of Coney Island from 1965 showing six
roller coasters. It is asking anybody that looks at the photograph to
see if they can name them all. If not when they go to see the rest of
the exhibit in the Children's section they will find the answers.I am a Coney Island historian who owns a private museum with over 4,000
artifacts from Coney Island. I will be doing a video and lecture
presentation along with showing some of the rarest Coney Island
photographs from my personal collection of close to 1,000 photos. Any
ACE members who would like to learn more about Coney Island is welcome
to come to these presentations on either Monday, May 7, at 7:30pm or
Tuesday, May 8, at 3:00pm. Any member who comes 6:00pm on May 7, or
1:30pm on May 8 will have ample time to browse through my 200 plus
photos that I will be bringing to the presentation. If you have fond
memories of Steeplechase Park, then you would not want to miss this
presentation, as a great deal of the presentation will be about George
C. Tilyou and his Steeplechase Park.If any member that will be attending the presentation has a request to
see something special or unusual (excluding any oddities) they may
e-mail me at THEFUNNYPLACE@AOL.COM and I will do my best to satisfy your
request.I can guarantee that anyone who attends WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!!!!
The phone for the Northport Library is (631) 261-6930.
Regards,
